Our Call to Maturity

“Finally, brothers and Sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any excellence and anything worthy of praise — think about these things.” — Philippians 4:8

Growing in Christ is a lifelong calling. As Christians, we are invited to mature in faith, deepen our understanding of God’s Word, and be formed more fully into the likeness of Jesus. At St. Michael’s, we offer several pathways for spiritual formation—through catechesis, discipleship, study, and shared life together.

Below are opportunities to deepen your walk with Christ and engage more intentionally with His Church.

Sunday Morning Catechesis

Catechesis—“to instruct” in Greek—is the historic Anglican practice of grounding believers in Scripture and the life of the Church. We offer classes for all ages from infants through adults. Adult catechesis includes rotating biblical, theological, and topical series. Past studies have included:

  • Surprised by Hope by N. T. Wright

  • A yearlong exploration of the New Testament in its historical context

  • Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero

  • The Epic of Eden (Sandra Richter)

  • Church History in Plain Language by Bruce Shelley

  • Strange New World by Carl Trueman

(Learn more about our children and youth classes here.)

Summer Catechism Class

Each summer, our pastoral interns teach through the ACNA Catechism, To Be a Christian—a question-and-answer guide to Christian belief shaped by Scripture, the Creeds, and the Anglican tradition.
This course is recommended for all and required for leadership involvement or Confirmation.

Participants learn the foundations of Christian doctrine including the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the basics of Christian life and practice.

Men’s Discipleship Group

The Men’s Discipleship Group is designed primarily for young men in their 20’s and 30’s seeking to grow in faith, character, and Christian maturity. Led by one of our priests, the group meets throughout the year for prayer, study, and mentorship.

The focus of the group includes:

  • Biblical Study: Exploring Scripture together and applying it to everyday life.

  • Spiritual Formation: Learning practical ways to grow closer to Christ through prayer, accountability, and discipleship.

  • Mentorship & Fellowship: Developing relationships with peers and leaders, gaining guidance from mature men in the faith.

This group provides a supportive and structured environment where young men can ask questions, wrestle with challenges, and grow in confidence as followers of Jesus. All young men of the parish are welcome to join.

The Women’s Read

The Women’s Read is a monthly reading and discussion group for women, meeting on third Fridays during the academic year. This group provides a space for spiritual growth, thoughtful conversation, and meaningful fellowship through the lens of classic fiction.

Key aspects of the group include:

  • Literary Exploration: Reading and discussing classic novels such as Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, engaging both the literary and moral dimensions of the text.

  • Faith Integration: Reflecting on themes, characters, and narratives through a Gospel-centered lens, helping participants see how literature can illuminate Christian life and values.

  • Community & Support: Building friendships with other women of the parish in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

  • Invitational Atmosphere: The group is open to parishioners and friends alike, offering an easy and relational way to introduce others to the life of St. Michael’s.

This group is ideal for women who enjoy reading, discussion, and spiritual reflection, and who desire to grow in understanding and fellowship alongside others in the parish.

Biblical Greek Study Group

Meeting every other Monday night, this group is open to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of the New Testament in its original language. The group uses Dr. Bill Mounce's text, Basics of Biblical Greek.
